Famous for its viral karaoke videos, The Chestergate pub in Stockport have changed their name to show support for the England team during the World Cup. The Chestergate has been renamed ‘The Southgate’ in honour of England Manager Gareth Southgate for the duration of the football tournament.
A huge sign bearing The Southgate name has been lifted into place above the regular sign at the pub. The signage includes images of the football manager in his signature three-piece suit and the ‘O’ in Southgate has also been filled in with the red and white colours of the England flag.
The team are also proudly wearing their England branded uniforms to pull their pints, and they’ve even got a life-sized cut-out of the England boss for fans to pose with when they head in for the matches and a pint.
It’s not the first time the pub has been renamed as it first made the name change when England made it to the Euro finals last summer. It was such a success with customers that it was a no brainer to change it again for the World Cup!
Steph Armstrong, Manager of ‘The Southgate’ (Chestergate) commented:
Everyone is loving the name change and stopping to take photos with our sign. It has really encouraged people to come and watch the game here which is great! We have been juggling the karaoke with the football as so far, two of the group stage games have fallen when we have our infamous karaoke sessions, but it has worked out for everyone.
We are really excited for the next stage of the tournament and will be backing the boys all the way. Their clash against Senegal falls on a Sunday, a day we don’t have karaoke, so we expect the pub to be full of football fans and the atmosphere to be incredible!
