Not many pub companies can say they refurbished a pub during lockdown and opened a pub in a global pandemic, but Blind Tiger Inns are not many pub companies. The Hawk in Wigan is Blind Tiger Inns 19th addition and although it has come at one of the most uncertain times ever in the hospitality industry; it is vital to keep moving and building for the future.
Located in the middle of the Hawkley Hall estate, the Hawk has always been at the heart of its community but was in need of some investment and modernisation. Starting with the exterior of the pub, the beer garden was extended to improve its curb appeal. The beer garden was turfed, with a variety of custom-designed low and high furniture as well as TVs and speakers making it a real haven and desirable place for people to sit and enjoy their drinks.
The interior of the pub has been modernised and given a contemporary look while still keeping its traditional pub feel that it is loved for. A state-of-the art contactless pool table, dart board and the latest amusement machines have been installed in the games room. A large stage was built at the front of the main lounge to accommodate all the entertainment the pub will have at weekends.
Although the pub was ready to open in April, the decision was made to only open once customers could be served indoors, thus opening on Monday 17th May. It wasn’t your usual grand opening as customers were not able to come to the bar and had to be served at their tables in maximum groups of 6. They were also required to check themselves in via the NHS Covid-19 app before they could be legally served.
Despite all of the challenges faced, the manager and team members have taken everything in their stride and made it the best possible experience that they can under the restrictions!

“Managing the Hawk has always been a dream of mine and even though it isn’t how I imagined it having to open during a global pandemic, I have loved every second!. Don’t get me wrong, it has been stressful at times with all the different rules we have to adhere to but the customers have been absolutely amazing and patient with us all and I just know it is going to be the best community pub for miles when we can trade properly.”
